I'm dreaming of more sexy unmentionables

The possibilty of a trip to the US has appeared, and it has set my mind racing in excitment. The MET? The Rangers? The parties? The friends? The shopping? I shouldn't dream such thoughts though. Especially the ones about sexy unmentionables. I own... more than enough. More than enough for 6 women. Possibly 10. But how can one not fall in love with such pretty sets? And when I think of the United States, I think of a few choice stores which are not available here in Canada... like Victoria Secret.

Winter Dresses

I wear dresses all summer, but in winter I tend to turn to jeans and sweaters. I've been thinking about ways to incorporate dresses into my winter wear. Despite my love of bare legs I'm thinking the answer might be tights. Some examples of cheerful dresses for the cooler seasons.

It's A Wonderful Life

Every year my mother and I watch this movie on Christmas Eve. Every year I cry.
This year I'm not at home, and this tradition is one that we will have to skip. I looked for the movie before I left, but couldn't find it. And although I love traditions, this year we are making new traditions. This is my first Christmas not at home. But I am with my family (more family than usual), and it's lovely. Instead we are following another tradition. This year we are watching Love Actually. It appeals to my romantic nature.
Happy Almost Christmas.

When You Land Here It's Time To Return

I landed on Tuesday in beautiful British Columbia where I will be spending Christmas with my Nana and wonderful aunt and beautiful cousins as well as my own family. If my updates are slow then it is because I'm busy... having fun, eating, cooking, grocery shopping, and just generally enjoying the festive season.

Merry Christmas Eve Morning!

What To Wear?: Christmas Party Edition Final Decision

I have decided what to wear to THE PARTY OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON. I own at least... oh, 6 little black dresses, each one perfect in it's own way. But my most recent, and my favourite is a little Ted Baker number that I brought back from Dublin. The little black dress is always appropriate. Depending on how many buttons I do up in the front this single items of clothing could be worn (and has been worn at) a wedding, a bachelorette, a birthday and at work. Hell, it would work at a funeral, cocktail party, dinner party, or meeting (and impressing) parents. What other single item can do that except maybe a sick pair of heels. Ha. Thought not. This cost a pretty penny, but I do not regret it in the least. Thank goodness my bestie Pony was there to talk me into it. Now let's see how it holds up tonight! (And let's see how I hold up in 4.5 inch heels!)

A Gentleman Shaves

Dear Mr. Smith: I was getting ready for a first date and asked two women if I should shave for it. A friend my age – 24 – said emphatically not, but my sister-in-law, who is 33, said I should always shave, especially on a first date. Personally, I think I look better with three-day-old stubble, but we're talking about a real date here, a dinner-and-wine deal. Is shaving necessary?

I have answered this question before, but I have strong views on the matter – views that turn out to be controversial. Whether or not to shave for dates is probably the argument I have most with my readers. So let's do it again.

Age, of course, is a factor here. The question strikes someone of my vintage as ludicrous. (Honestly, they'll be asking me if they should shower next.) A gentleman shaves. He wants to show he has made some effort for his date. He wants to impress on her his maturity and sophistication.

A woman, after all, does not want to be dating a teenager; she wants to be dating a man. A man who does not need to prove his manliness by sprouting bristle like a thug.

Okay, so what about that 24-year-old female friend of yours? Is she not a woman? Don't her tastes matter? Good point. There are indeed people who are so young that they are thrilled by the mere fact their date needs to shave at all, and like to be reminded of it. Maybe your date will be one of those. Maybe she also likes unwashed hair and ironic T-shirts, in which case you shouldn't be taking her out for a dinner with wine. Take her instead to a tavern to see some ironically whiny indie rock. Order a pitcher of beer. You guys aren't ready for restaurants yet.

Remember, though, that she, too, will one day be a woman of 33. Why not accelerate her maturity? Why not be the one who introduces her to the kind of pleasures – non-ironic restaurants, for example – that await then?

Try to think of the other diners too. You may think that you look better with stubble; I think you just look dirty.

Lost and then Found

"But then, somewhere in Oregon, as I sped along a river glinting in the sun, it hit me. The window was down, music was playing, and I felt more free than I had in months. I felt myself again—and I hadn’t even noticed that somewhere along the way I’d lost me. In that moment was all the joy and adventure and lust for life I had been missing, and I remembered why it is I travel. Because sometimes it is only in leaving home that we can remember who we are. It is only in getting lost, that we find ourselves again, whole."

Drawing With Light

"We artists are indestructible; even in a prison, or in a concentration camp, I would be almighty in my own world of art, even if I had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell."

Christmas Wish List: Etsy Style

For Christmas I want world peace, an end to hunger, and a swift move towards action in terms of correcting the environmental crisis... obviously! But if I can't have that I will also accept...

But really, I have been receiving text messages from my mom asking for my Christmas list for at least the past week. What I want is a bike or a horse, but I've been asking for both of those for years, with no luck.

So instead I present my current list, full of lovely Etsy items. Etsy is wonderful because:
#1- You can shop from the office (ahem, not me of course).
#2- If you have a thing agianst crowds, you can get all your shopping done in peaceful bliss, and have the gifts delivered to your home.
#3- All the items are way more personal/original.
#4- You are supporting individual artists/crafters. And doesn't it feel good to support individuals who are trying to make some money doing what they love/by being creative?

I am making a conscious effort to try and make, or buy from local or crafting individuals for more gifts this year, while cutting down on the mass produced items. No this does not mean that my brother will be getting something he really doesn't want (he wants video games) or that I am taking  my requests for Sephora and Bath and Bodyworks items off my list... it just means that when I can, I'm taking the time to find something really special for those who might appreciate it.

What To Wear?: Christmas Party Edition v3

This outfit reminds me of old school Hollywood glamour, when women curled their hair, and never left the house without lipstick. (Like my Nana.) While I normally don't go for such a slick look, everyone needs to be glamorous every now and then. It's very eye catching. No slouching or hiding in this outfit. Not the only question is, do you have the guts to pull it off? (I also feel the folds might be kind if someone were to want to pig out at the hoilday buffet. Not that I ever do that...)

Now THAT'S a party

I enjoy throwing parties. Hell. I LOVE throwing parties. (Just as much as I love attending them.) And the blog Sunday Suppers always inspires me to entertain. Classic and beautiful, these are the type of parties I aspire to one day include in my repertoire. I don't think I'll ever give up my ruckus-y house/dance parties, but it would be nice to have a dinner party again. If you have a chance, look at the beautiful photograph, and recipes included in the blog.

(However when it comes to throwing parties THIS GIRL puts me to shame.)
