I don't know about you, but I've been seeing chambray shirts all over for the past 6 months or so, and I think it's about time I just on that trend. When the trend first came out I didn't know how often I would wear the shirt, but then I remembered, jeans go with EVERYTHING. My jean jacket goes with EVERYTHING, why not have a shirt, that will, in all likelyness go with EVERYTHING. Except blue jeans. I'm not ready for that yet.

Did everyone have a Christmas full with family and friends and food and love? (And gifts?) I know I did! (Also with tylenol and tea and vitamins trying to make myself feel better with this horrible cold I have.)

I was over at my mother's for Sunday dinner, and she introduced me to her new kettle. And I'm in love. Not only does this fulfill my kettle requirements (not plastic, is removable from it's base) but it actually allows you to boil water at different temperatures depending on what type of tea you are making! So on a whim we decided to go to Montreal last weekend. I have probably been to Montreal 40+ times in my life, but that almost makes it more of a vacation! I don't NEED to do anything. I've done it all already! In turn that lead to visiting friends (from Coachella), drinking wine, eating deliciously rich food, and exploring stores, old favourites, and new notables. I took a few pictures of my trip to share.

Crossing the bridge into Montreal

Dinner for the first night was at Au Pied de Cochon. Also known as French food on steroids. Everything had foie gras on it. I'm not complaining! If you are in Montreal, you MUST go! You must also expect to gain 5 pounds from this meal alone.

St Hubert coleslaw. I pretty much lived on this stuff in undergrad. Every time I return to Montreal I make it a mission to find this chain restaurant (there are a ton of them, so it isn't that hard), and eat a lot of coleslaw. It's nice and tart, not too sweet! And it's unlimited with most meals. So basically I eat like 3 bowls. Classy.

The SAQ (the Quebec liquor stores), have an IMPRESSIVE selection of bubbly. I wanted to buy it ALL!

The Atwater Market (Marche Atwater) is another favourite stop in Montreal for me. It's an indoor/outdoor market, with lots of lovely fruits, veggies, jams, baked goods, Quebec cheeses and meats, and maple syrup. It's not big, but it's small (Vinyl Cafe reference anyone?) and cute (and is close to the metro/has free parking.) A must visit!

I also stayed at the Le Centre Sheraton Montreal. I got a pretty good price online through their website, especially considering I booked the day before I left. It was a nice hotel. Nothing too crazy, but a clean, quiet hotel, quite close to the metro, and the main streets. The downside? $24 a night for parking, and wireless internet is not included (really??)

Other restaurants I visited:

La Cantine:

A great brunch spot.

$46 for brunch for two with a coffee and a tea including tax and tip.

Bremner:

A very popular spot, we lucked out showing up at 6pm (right when they opened). It's got a bit of a following thanks to Chuck Hughes who was the first Canadian to beat Bobby Flay on Iron Chef, and also has his own Food Network Show. Chuck was in the house the night I was there (yes, he actually WORKS in his two restaurants), although I didn't see him. But then again I didn't go into the kitchen. The food was good. Really good. But not OMG-the-best-i've-ever-had. Which is too bad because it's been consistently getting 5 stars. Their homemade cocktails however, are probably worth the trip alone. Try the bourbon berry. YUM.

(It is pricey though. We paid $220 for 4 cocktails, 6 oysters, 4 "sharing/tapas style" dishes, and one dessert.)

Pullman:

A nice wine bar. However they force you to order food, which they didn't tell us until after we had finished our bottle of wine, and had asked for the bill. Unimpressed. Still, a good place to go on a date, as I saw lots of couples around

Wednesday night I prepared a lovely little feast. Braised beef short ribs, roasted asparagus, and a fancy little cheese platter to start things off. (Also because the short ribs cook for 2-3 hours and I needed a snacks since I didn't eat until after 8pm.) There is something so lovely and home-y about cooking a nice rich meaty meal with a glass of red wine and a platter of a few cheeses when the weather drops. (Is this why people pack on the pounds in winter? Probably!)

Weekend Update: Dancing

Hello all! I have had a lovely weekend so far. I took yesterday off work because I was exausted. Also because I had already surpassed my weekly work hours by about 10 hours, so I thought it best not to push past that if I didn't need to. (The good news is lots of days off in the future!) Yesterday I mostly slept. I also ran a few errands and went to a yoga class, but mostly, I was lazy. And it was nice. This weekend has consisted of a wicked movie at the Regent Park Film Festival (closing tonight!), Thai food, and will shortly consist of AYCE sushi, a dance party, shopping, brunch, and a dinner at home with my mommy! (And puppy and kid brother). Nice. I hope you all have a productive and relaxing weekend.

And dancing. I hope you all dance tonight. A weekend isn't a weekend without dancing.

I've been having a love affair with grey recently. I painted my new bedroom a soft shade of grey, and I have been lusting over these gray sheets (my obsession with stripes is nothing new). I found this fantastic home/cottage awhile back on Design To Inspire. I love how rustic it is, while still feeling pleasantly put together. It's casual, but intentional. I've been going to Muskoka for years to cottage. (Cottage=Lake House) As a child my family didn't camp. In fact, I've never been camping. (Which is a shame.) We would go to cottages instead. Now that the temperature is starting to drop I'm grudging looking forward to fall. I DO love fall, with apple cider, and sweaters, changing leaves and the smell of fire places, it's just that I ALSO love summer, sundresses, and not wearing a jacket. That being said, living in Canada, four seasons are inevitable, so I try and make the best of it. I like looking back at the Fall collections to see what we will be seeing on the street. Guys, I am VERY excited as my dear friend and past roomie Lady M will be arriving ANY MINUTE! She's staying with me for the weekend, and we're going to have a lot of fun. I have cleaned the kitchen and the bathroom in preperation for her visit (that's friendship for you!), and now I wait while my clothes are in the drying (rain storm on the scooter ride home). I can't wait for this weekend! Not only is Lady M here from Ottawa, but two friends of mine from uni are getting married, and people are flying in from all over the country for the wedding! Fun fun fun! Dressing up, making pizza, dancing, shopping, glasses of bubbly, celebrating love, and maybe a trip to rib fest? Yes, quite a (long) weekend planned! I hope you all have a blast!

Well, I have not been super good about posting regularly this month, have I? Well, everyone has to fall off the bandwagon sometime, and what with my apartment move last month, going out of town, cottaging, having drinks on patios, and you know, working, it's just been a busy whirl wind! But now that it's heading towards fall (it's not here yet!) I'm going to try and get back in the inspiration groove! I'm also going to try and include more "original content", but since I am not a great photographer, we will see how that goes. Anyway, for those still reading, thanks for sticking with! Happy Friday! I'm headed out to cottage country again with a bestie and her lovely boy. I'm looking forward to eating cheese, reading, sleeping, eating chocolate and drinking wine. And not being alone. The boy is off at a wedding in Vancouver, and nights have been a little sadder for the past few days, you know? I think the weekend will be good, and don't worry, I have a supply of chocolate for when any sadness hits. Chocolate does help.

Grandma and Nana

This weekend was not as expected. While I wrote to you last week with the expectation of celebration at a wedding of friends, instead I unexpectedly, and unpleasantly experienced the loss of a very loved one. Yes, the weekend was not the revelry that I had hoped for and anticipated. I was in the Finger Lake region of upstate New York, on my way to Vermont when I got that call that my loving Grandma had slipped into a coma. While I was assured that I did not need to return home, I didn't consider it an option. I had to try and make it home to say goodbye. So after 8 hours in a car, I turned around, caught a red eye bus from Syracuse driving through the night, and bringing me back home. I did indeed make it to the hospital in time to say my goodbyes, and although my grandma was mostly unresponsive, I wanted and needed that chance to tell her how much I loved her, and how much she had meant to me over the years. She passed away Sunday morning.

This morning I heard of new of another cancer related death. Jack Layton, leader of the NDP, Canada's left wing political party, and Canada's current official opposition succumbed to his second battle with cancer. It was a quick blow, it had been merely weeks ago that he had announced his break from politics to try and recover from a bout of cancer. But the writing was on the wall as even at that time he looked gaunt and unwell.

So with a heart of sadness I leave you with some inspiration. For each sadness helps us to appreciate what we do have more, and reminds us to live every moment, and to always, always say I love you. I leave you with some beautiful words from Jack Layton's farewell letter.

"To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better... As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

Holy crap batman, have I been busy! I haven't spent a weekend at home in months, and this one will be no different. Why do you ask, am I writing about the weekend when it's only Wednesday? Well, because I'm headed to Vermont for a great big hippie wedding camping love fest tomorrow, so essentially my weekend starts... now! I'm sorry for being absent this week, but I have had too much to do! Tonight I have some VERY lovely ladies coming over for raspberry margaritas and snacks, and then I have to pack for the wedding! But despite the rush, I'm very thankful. For my various friends who keep me out almost every night, for my job which keeps me busy, and pays my bills, and is fun, and for my family and my new home (which is still a mess). I do find that when I get stressed it help me to remind myself of how very lucky I am. Now, back to work!! I'm hoping to come home from Wedstock full of memories, photos, blisters from too much dancing, and lots to be thankful for.

Today's picture makes me smile. It gives me inspiration and hope. It's not a picture about shoes or clothing of homes or a witty quote. It's a picture of love.

(I dig that not everyone feels the same way as me, so feel free to move along to the next post if this isn't your cup of tea.)

Some of you may know that I was in NYC (incidentally) when New York approved the same sex marriage bill, and I piled out onto the street to celebrate with the rest of Manhattan, and ended up in front of the Stonewall Inn. It was a beautiful night, full of excitement, tears, proposals, songs, and joy.

This weeked the first couples were allowed to marry, legally in New York State. Now this has been a right in Ontario where I live since 2003. Toronto is a very special place. I grew up with people literally from all over the world, I learned to play the dreidel game in elementary school. My high school teachers were cool, pierced with mohawks, and openly gay. I never thought that anyone was less or more than myself, and that everyone is and should be treated equally (thanks momma, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom). So when I read this story about the first couple to marry in Manhattan I literally stopped in my tracks. It wasn't that long ago that my parents wouldn't have been allowed to marry in the United States. It wasn't until 1967 that the US Supreme Court ended all race based marriage restriction. Really? Are you hearing this? Alabama didn't repeal it's mixed race marriage laws until 2000. What? Are you kidding me? I simply cannot imagine being in love, going through the ups and the downs of a relationship, and not being able to recognize my union legally or spiritually, not being allowed to have a wedding.

Holding on to your love, no matter what your country or state says. That's beautiful.

And then I cried at work. True story. I'm a sap for love.

Do you burn in the sun? Do you freckle? Do you tan really dark and don't like how you look with a tan? I know people who fit into all of the above categories (myself included), and this looks like an awesome option. I remember when I went to the beach town of Lagos, Portugal. The sun was bright and strong, and although my pale bestie and I enjoyed our time down by the water, we both wanted to avoid the harsh rays. We choose to rent a sun umbrella, and curl up into little balls under the small amount of shade. This is a better (and more stylish) option. Sun safety (and pale skin) is sexy people! Cancer is not.

Laundry Room Inspiration

So my laundry room in my new apartment is in my kitchen. Which is ok. I mean, at least I have laundry in my apartment. I haven't had to use a laundromat or coin operated laundry machine since residence in first year, and let me say, I'm not ready to go back to those days. The main problem with the laundry and dryer being in my kitchen is that 1- my kitchen is small, and this takes up a fair amount of space. 2- the washer is an old school one which wheels up and attached to the faucet and the sink in order to be used. (Well, our washer is currently broken, so this is all in theory.) This means that you can't do other things in the kitchen such as cook or empty the dishwasher, as the washing machine take up all the space. Well, que sera, sera. All this means is that I'm dreaming even more about a functional laundry room space... and you get to see my inspiration!
